Meet our Nutritionist, Hanna Serrano!
Hanna is a JMU Alum and was a health and wellness intern for our dining program during her time on campus. She is originally from Gainsville, VA and enjoys trying new recipes, traveling, being outdoors, and thrifting in her free time.
As an alum, Hanna is thrilled to be returning to Harrisonburg and looks forward to helping our students make the most of their JMU Dining experience.

Worry-Free Zone
An isolated, locked pantry, located in D-Hall, available to students who are medically required to avoid gluten, peanuts, and/or tree nuts. The pantry contains prepackaged goods our dietitian vets for gluten, peanut, and tree nut containing ingredients. To gain access to the pantry, reach out to our registered dietitian. Orientation is required before access is granted. Students with allergies beyond those listed above are welcome to contact us to determine if this space may be beneficial. Lifestyle Diets
At JMU Dining, we believe that good food is essential to a healthy lifestyle. That is why our menus are built with health in mind. Our daily offerings allow you to build a balanced meal around fruit, vegetables, lean meats, grains and low-fat dairy. Look for these icons around campus to help make eating healthy and easy choice.
Eat Well: Designates items with <500 calories (<10% coming from saturated fat), also containing <750 mg of sodium, and at least one whole-food component (whole grains, lean protein, fruits, vegetables, etc.)
Plant Forward: Designates a style of cooking and eating that emphasizes healthy plants at the center of the plate with a proportionally small quantity of animal protein.
Vegetarian: Designates items containing no meat, fish or poultry, but can include dairy, eggs or honey.
Vegan: Designates items containing no animal products of any kind, including dairy, eggs and honey.
Made with Whole Grains: Designates menu items that contain a leading whole grain item in the ingredient list.
Local: Sustainably purchased food and supplies within the Commonwealth of Virginia.
Individualized Dining Tour
Tours are led by JMU Dining's registered dietitian with the goal of ensuring students get the information needed to self-advocate and make informed decisions about what to eat, safely. During the tour, the student will receive personalized information about menu offerings at different stations, will be introduced to campus culinarians and dining managers, and will learn how best to communicate with JMU Dining staff. Chef-Prepared Meals
We understand our menu offerings are not suitable for every medically prescribed diet. If the student is not getting a variety of food from the above resources, the student can meet with JMU Dining's registered dietitian to set-up an assessment of needs and arrange a schedule for chef-prepared meals. JMU Dining's culinarians will prepare an individualized meal to meet the specifications of the medically prescribed diet. A meeting with the registered dietitian and culinary team is required for accommodation. Students are required to commit to a schedule and adhere to standards set for communication regarding their meals. Contact us to set-up a meeting for assessment at serrano-hanna@aramark.com.

General Sick Policy
This policy is for students who are ill and don't feel well enough to leave their room.
- Please email Debbie Bahr at our dining@jmu.edu email and let us know who you authorize to use your JACard
- The authorized person can pick up food in any of our locations, including a to-go box in residential and drop the food off to the ill student
- This policy applies not only to students with COVID, but any who are ill and have meal plans
